Alex was born and raised in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil with his parents and two siblings.
He graduated from vet school in 2013 from the Federal University of Espirito Santo and began practicing as a family veterinarian. It was during this time he discovered his passion for veterinary surgery!
Alex completed a surgical residency at the Federal University of Minas Gerais, then more advanced surgical training at Cornell University in New York with a research fellowship focusing on Cranial Cruciate Ligament Disease (ACL disease), Total Hip Replacements (THR), and gait analysis.
After moving to the United States, Alex focused on gaining US citizenship which required an intermission before pursuing his goals in veterinary medicine. He spent 2 years in the construction field roofing, laying floors, and learning how different the northeast winters are from the weather in Brazil!
After gaining US citizenship, Alex completed the rigorous ECFVG process to become a licensed veterinarian in the United States. He then practiced veterinary medicine in Kansas while continuing to strive for advanced surgical training.
Alex’s humble work ethic and unique surgical skill was rewarded with a surgical residency at the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine. It was during this three year training program that he pioneered a 3D model surgical rehearsal program to enhance surgical preparedness to minimize surgical risk and complications. Alex excelled in his surgical residency and is very excited to be a part of the surgical team at Bedrock Veterinary Specialists.
Alex enjoys all aspects of his surgical caseload including orthopedic conditions of the knee and hip, as well as arthroscopy, angular limb deformities, challenging fractures, and advanced oncologic and neurologic surgeries.
Alex is passionate about providing pets with the best possible quality of life through pain free mobility. He believes that the highest standard of care comes from a team-based approach and effective client communication focused on education for pet owners with an honest discussion about the condition, prognosis, complication risk, post-operative care, and expected outcomes.
Outside of work Alex loves to spend time with his wife, Natalia, and their 3 children Zoe, Noa, and Zion. His family enjoys spending time at the water’s edge, traveling, hiking, and visiting his family’s coffee farm in Brazil. The Silva family’s beloved pets include a Golden named Sky and a large-and-in-charge cat named Floyd.
